From Anne Donahue, VT State Representative, on Front Porch Forum 7/19/2023:
There is so much information out in so many formats that I want to suggest the most essential three reminders for anyone trying to address their flood damages.
First and foremost: there is a deadline to apply to FEMA for funding support for any of your losses. The deadline is 30 days after disaster was declared. The sooner the better — but for certain, file an application no later than August 11. Either call 800-621-3362 or go to www.DisasterAssistance.gov
The FEMA application is not the same as filing with Vermont 2-1-1, which should also be done but does not replace the essential FEMA application.
Second: Document all your losses and keep all receipts.
Third: Beware of scams and ask for ID from any agencies that come to your door to offer help. Trailer Park residents whose homes have been destroyed: Do not accept offers that are being made to buy your trailer. They are not legitimate.
I know how devastating this situation is for those who have had major losses. Remember that Vermont’s key contact number for asking for where to get help is 2-1-1, BUT also that they are getting a huge volume of calls, so it will take patience to get through.
Your Vermont neighbors want to help, but we don’t always know what you need. Remember that you can call your state representatives — me or Ken Goslant — if you can’t find the answers you need. We will try our best to help to get those answers. My number is 802-636-7857, and Ken’s is 802-249-7375.
FEMA #: 800-621-3362 (2-1-1 is overloaded )
To log a claim, FEMA needs:
- Full Name
- Address
- Social Security #
- Any other info, but anything is better than not calling
Washington County Sheriff’s Dept.
UPDATE:
The Sheriff’s Dept has moved to 322 N Main St in Barre. Behind Domino’s Pizza. Our phone number is the same 802-223-3001. We are operating using a cell phone, so please leave a message if you can’t get through.
Mail: Hopefully, like everyone else w/a PO Box we will get our mail today. Please continue to use: PO Box 678, Montpelier VT 05602-0678. Please DO NOT use our 10 Elm St address.
We are still serving papers, if this is an urgent service, I would suggest that you hand-deliver. We are sharing an office with Life Map Counseling.
Unfortunately, we are unable to do fingerprints at this time. We are hoping by the second week of August, but that is not set in stone. We will up date here and on Facebook.

Montpelier Passport Office
Jul 19, 2023
Until further notice, the Montpelier passport office will be closed for repair of flood damage. Those wishing to find an alternate passport office should go to the State Department website at http://travel.state.gov to find locations. When repairs of the Montpelier office are complete, public notice will be given of the re-opening date.
Flood Cleanup Debris
Mark Bosma • Public Information Officer, Department of Public Safety, State of Vermont
Those cleaning their homes after the flood should put their debris near the public road (*not common household trash). Towns will either pick up the debris or work with a contractor to haul it away. It is important that you sort out any household hazardous waste like cleaning supplies, fuel, paint, etc. Those items will be collected at a later date. Guidance can be found at https://www.fema.gov/fact-sheet/debris-removal-guidelines-help-you-and-your-community, you needn’t make six piles but hazardous materials should be stored away.
Roxbury Included in Disaster Relief Declaration
To see the Governor’s press release on this from July 14, 2023 go to:
https://governor.vermont.gov/press-release/president-biden-approves-governor-scotts-major-disaster-declaration-request
From the federal registration site mentioned in the press release above, Washington County is included. For more information or to register go to: https://www.disasterassistance.gov/
or Phone: 1-800-621-3362.
Vermonters are also urged to call 211 or https://vermont211.org/ to report their damage. By registering with Vermont 2-1-1, it helps create a fuller picture of the State’s disaster assessment, and enable FEMA to reach out to applicants directly.
